ABOUT
CROATIAN
Serbo-Croatian
is the most widely spoken language of Yugoslavia (the Republic of Serbia and
Montenegro), Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The two standard forms of
the language — Serbian and Croatian — are essentially the same
but are based on different dialects.
Croatian is written in the Roman alphabet while the Serbian alphabet is written in Cyrillic characters. There is an exact correspondence between symbols in the Cyrillic and Roman alphabets, so written material can be easily transliterated between the two.
There are seven nominal cases in Serbo-Croatian. Three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter), and two numbers (singular and plural) are also distinguished. Case, grammatical gender, and number are represented by a single marker suffixed to the noun.
The Croatian word for "Croatian" is hrvatski. The letter r frequently serves as a vowel. The following Croatian words are examples of this: prst (finger), vrt (garden), krv (blood), brz (fast), crn (black), and trg (market). The Italian city of Trieste is spelled Trst in Croatian.
