ABOUT INDONESIAN
Indonesian, or bahasa
Indonesia ("Indonesian language"), is the national language of the Republic
of Indonesia. It was decreed the country's official language in 1945 when
its independence was declared. Bahasa Indonesia is based on the Malay
trade dialect and is virtually the same language as Malay (bahasa Melayu),
spoken in Malaysia.
Indonesia's most widely spoken language is Javanese, but it is estimated that as much as three-fourths of the population now understands bahasa Indonesia and speak it as their second language. A number of Javanese words have been adopted into Indonesian. (Java is the most populous island of Indonesia.)
The principal difference between the Indonesian and Malay languages is in the spelling — the Indonesian system was developed by the Dutch, and the Malay by the British. In 1972 the two systems were made the same.
In Indonesian the plural is formed by merely repeating the word, as in angan-angan, which means "fantasies," or rumah-rumah, which means "houses."
Following are an example of a few Indonesian phrases: selamat pagi = good morning; selamat malam = good evening; terima kasih = thank you; selamat jalan = good-bye (to someone who is leaving you), selamat tinggal = good-bye (if you're the one who is leaving). Also, Bisa bicara Bahasa Inggris? = Do you speak English? and Saya tidak mengerti = I don't understand.
