ABOUT
ITALIAN
Of all the Romance
languages, Italian is the language closest to the original Latin. Italian
is considered one of the most beautiful languages and is spoken by
65 million people. There are many different dialects, which can vary
tremendously — so much so that sometimes communication within Italian
can become difficult.
There are 21 letters in the Italian alphabet. The letters j, k, w, x, and y are not used, though the letters are recognized in foreign languages such as English. One written accent is used in the language — the grave (pronounced "grahv"). It is used in a multi-syllable word whose stress is on the last syllable. An example is "città," which means "city."
