ABOUT JAPANESE
Japanese is the official language of Japan. There are about 130 million Japanese speakers worldwide. In earlier centuries, Japanese was heavily influenced by the Chinese language. More recently, English and Dutch influences have helped shape the language.

There are times when the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese languages are confused with each other for those who are unfamiliar with the differences. Though they look similar, each language is unique, consisting of many thousands of characters.

Decades ago Japanese was written vertically, starting from the right. Today many texts are written horizontally to allow for English words, Arabic numerals, and mathematical formulas.

One question we are often asked regarding the translation of "character languages" such as Japanese is "How many characters equal one English word?" In a very general sense, you can estimate that it takes two or three Japanese characters to equal an average English word.
