ABOUT NORWEGIAN
Norwegian is the national language of Norway, spoken by virtually all of the country's inhabitants. It is one of the Scandinavian languages, which are descended from the Old Norse spoken throughout Scandinavia in Viking times.

Norway and Denmark were one country for four centuries before 1814; between 1814 and 1905 Norway was under the Swedish crown. During the years of Danish rule a Danish-based "city language" began to develop in Bergen and Oslo, which eventually became the written language of Norway. Therefore, Norwegian is very similar to Danish, and somewhat less similar to Swedish.

Around the year 1850 a movement for the recognition of Norwegian as a language distinct from Danish led to the establishment of landsmål ("country language"), which was based on dialects of rural Norway and was intended to revive the tradition of Old Norse, which had been interrupted in the 15th century. Landsmål is presently called nynorsk which means ("New Norse").

Nynorsk is one of two distinct dialects of Norwegian. The other is Dano-Norwegian, now known as bokmål ("book language") and was originally called riksmål ("state language"). Most newspapers and radio and television broadcasts are in bokmål. Nynorsk has equal status with bokmål in government and also in the schools. There have been attempts to combine nynorsk and bokmål into samnorsk ("Common Norwegian"), but so far they have been unsuccessful.

Both the Norwegian and Danish alphabets contain the additional letters o, ø, and å. English words of Norwegian origin include fjord, slalom, troll, lemming, auk, and narwhal.
