ABOUT SWEDISH
Swedish — or Svenska, as the Swedes call their language — is the most widely spoken of the Scandinavian languages. It belongs to the North Germanic subgroup of the Indo-European language family. Swedish is also spoken on the southwestern and southern coasts of Finland, on the Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea (also part of Finland), and to a lesser degree in Canada, Estonia, Norway, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. About 10 million people in the world speak Swedish.

Swedish has borrowed many words from German and French. In the 20th and 21st centuries English became by far the largest source of foreign borrowings. The grammar and syntax of the Swedish language are very similar to those of English, more so than to German and French. Many Swedish words are easily recognizable by English speakers and even more by German speakers.

Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish. Swedish and Danish comprise part of the East Scandinavian variant of the North Germanic languages, whereas the West Scandinavian branch includes Norwegian and Icelandic. The main difference between the East and West Scandinavian branches is that Swedish and Danish (of the East) have very few diphthongs.

The Swedish alphabet consists of 29 letters, the usual 26 of the English alphabet plus å, ä, and ö. The ä and ö distinguish it from Norwegian and Danish, which use œ and ø. Some English words of Swedish origin include smorgasbord (smörgås = "sandwich" and bord = "table") and tungsten (tung = "heavy" and sten = "stone").
